Subject Matter Experts: Offering a Deep Understanding of an Industry or Function

An alternative to our consulting careers is our stable of subject matter experts (SMEs). These senior-level leaders bring a deeper understanding of a specific industry or functional area, and then share that knowledge with our consultants. Dedicated to tracking trends and furthering their knowledge of the target area, our SMEs understand the value levers and market dynamics that are unique to their area of focus. They contribute to client engagements by offering insight that drives greater value from the project.

Analysts

Analyst is our entry level position. Analysts are staffed on only one project at a time and take on a wide variety of roles to build their experience. Analyst projects will vary in terms of geography and duration with a focus on supporting their senior colleagues who lead the engagement.

  • Responsibilities Include:
    • Conducting required research, market or data analysis, and all data gathering in support of client engagements
    • Preparing for client interviews or workshops
    • Participating in the development of client deliverables and/or presentations by actively contributing to the team's work during the project delivery
    • Providing support for the development of intellectual capital during or following project assignments
Senior Analysts

Senior Analysts take on a slightly expanded role from their analyst colleagues. Senior analysts are staffed on only one engagement at a time on projects that vary based on geography and duration. Senior analysts play a more active role in supporting the management of the project.

  • Responsibilities Include:
    • Conducting required research, market or data analysis, and all data gathering in support of client engagements
    • Providing input to project teams on how to approach the specific engagement and solve challenges during the assignment
    • Designing and developing solutions for the business problems identified in the project
    • Conducting client interviews or workshops as the assignment requires
    • Preparing client-ready deliverables and/or presentations by actively contributing to the team's work during the project delivery
    • Providing support for the development of intellectual capital during or following project assignments
Consultants

Consultants are assigned to one engagement at a time, and are asked to take on a broader role within the project team. Consultants can be assigned to clients in different regions and for various timeframes. At the consultant level, our employees start to prepare for project leadership roles by leading key modules of the projects. Consultants are also responsible for converting their expertise and experience into intellectual capital that build on the firm's consulting methodology.

  • Responsibilities Include:
    • Leading a work stream or project module according to the area of their expertise
    • Identifying the analysis required and defining the approach to solve client challenges within the context of the project
    • Defining an approach for the work stream aligned with the overall project framework
    • Designing and developing solutions for the business challenges identified in the project
    • Conducting client interviews or workshops at managerial levels
    • Managing the client relationship for the work stream under the consultant's responsibility
    • Deriving business insight, conclusions and sound recommendations from client interviews and overall analysis
    • Preparing client-ready deliverables and/or presentations by actively leading a work stream
    • Developing intellectual capital that results from the project
    • Participating in business development efforts through content preparation and delivery on client proposals
Senior Consultants

Senior Consultants take a leadership role in a wide variety of projects, often overseeing more than one engagement at a time. Senior Consultants lead the entire project scope including oversight of the team. They are then resposible for the development of the intellectual capital that results from the project work.

  • Responsibilities Include:
    • Taking on full ownership of a work stream within a large project or the leadership of the project as a whole depending on the size of the engagement
    • Structuring the project framework and defining specific methodologies to be used to solve business challenges within the context of the project
    • Planning and managing project steps, activities, resources and budget throughout the engagement
    • Actively managing the client relationship (along with the director/partner) during the project
    • Leading the project team by ensuring quality and on-time delivery
    • Developing the junior team members in the project according to their career plans
    • Leading the design of applicable solutions for the business problems identified during the project
    • Conducting high-level client interviews or managing workshops
    • Producing recommendations that result from client interviews, data gathering and analysis
    • Participating in the development of client-ready deliverables by actively leading the project team and presenting deliverables to the client
    • Developing intellectual capital
    • Participating in business development efforts ranging from prospecting to preparation of sales materials and proposals
Managers

Managers take the leadership role on several concurrent projects. They also play a more prominent part in business development as well as developing junior colleagues through coaching or mentorship programs.

  • Responsibilities Include:
    • Taking the full ownership of one or more project/s concurrently
    • Structuring the full scope of the project and defining the specific framework and methodologies to be used in the project
    • Managing the project plan, activities, project resources and budget throughout the project
    • Actively managing the client relationship during the project
    • Leading the project team by ensuring quality and on-time delivery
    • Developing project team members according to their career plans and monitoring their performance throughout the project
    • Leading project delivery by ensuring total client satisfaction
    • Conducting client interviews or managing workshops at executive levels
    • Developing intellectual capital that results from the project
    • Identifying potential opportunities with current clients
    • Tracking trends and opportunities in the market, generating leads, and preparing business proposals for the identified opportunities
    • Representing the firm in various business platforms, conferences and seminars through speeches and publishing white papers, articles, and other thought leadership pieces
Directors

Directors share their time and expertise among different roles including business development and the direction of large and complex projects or programs. Directors are leaders within the firm and are required to focus on new business acquisition and to contribute to the growth of the firm. They also have internal roles both in firm-building initiatives and in developing junior colleagues through coaching or mentorship programs and by communicating their industry or functional expertise.

  • Responsibilities Include:
    • Owning the client relationship as a whole with key account management responsibility
    • Directing large and complex projects by supervising the work done by the project teams, and having ultimate accountability for the outcome of these projects
    • Actively managing the client relationship and supporting project managers to ensure total client satisfaction
    • Developing junior colleagues by preparing annual development plans, monitoring performance, and tracking progress
    • Collaborating with partner to lead functional or industry-based practice groups
    • Developing new accounts, formulating related strategies and preparing action plans to align with specific annual growth plans
    • Tracking trends and opportunities in key markets, generating leads, and leading proposal development for identified opportunities
    • Developing new consulting approaches by leveraging expertise and experience within their functional or industry focus
    • Representing the firm in various business platforms, conferences and seminars through speeches and publishing white papers, articles, and other thought leadership pieces
Partners

Partners are the leaders who drive the growth both internally and externally. Clients rely on our partners' strategic thinking and deep management consulting expertise to achieve desired results. Our partners are responsible for new business acquisition globally and for creating the key business strategies and operational efficiencies across the firm.

  • Responsibilities Include:
    • Identifying, developing and directing the implementation of corporate strategies
    • Maintaining and developing organizational culture, company values and brand promise internally and externally
    • Leading regional or functional/industry practice groups as they become recognized experts within their functionality category or specific industry
    • Actively managing the business development plans for the regions or industries under their responsibility, including the development of new accounts, formulating growth strategies and preparing action plans
    • Developing lasting client relationships by working with top executives of existing and potential clients
    • Developing the consultant organization by preparing annual development plans, monitoring performance and assessing progress over time

Client:BMW

Industry:Automotive

Capability:Customer Experience Management

Challenge: BMW of North America (BMW NA) sought to leverage its dealer network to gain greater insight into customers, and ultimately identify and design opportunities to create the premium customer experience. The planned result was to assess dealer operations and processes to make them more customer-focused, efficient and ultimately, drive sales.

Work: BMW NA and Peppers & Rogers Group evaluated dealers across six modules that reflect key aspects of the customer lifecycle: lead management, showroom traffic control, lease end, new vehicle delivery, initial ownership, and people and environment. Through interviews with dealer center personnel Peppers & Rogers Group classified each dealer's strengths, gaps and opportunities for improvement in each of the six modules. Following the interviews, the BMW NA and Peppers & Rogers Group team drafted an action plan for each dealer center that includes recommendations and next steps.

Result: At last measure, 14% of the total BMW NA dealer network, have been conducted with great success, and SPM has been identified as one of the leading growth strategy initiatives for BMW NA.
